ABOUT ÉVORA
The city of Évora is the capital of district of Évora , in the region of Alentejo and sub-region of Central Alentejo , with 52,295 inhabitants, in 2021. Évora is the only Portuguese city that is a member of the Network of Oldest European Cities.
The city of Évora is home to the County de Évora, the fifth largest municipality in Portugal, with an area of 1307.08 km², subdivided into 12 parishes . The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Arraiolos , northeast by Estremoz , east by Redondo , southeast by Reguengos de Monsaraz , south by Portel , southwest by Viana do Alentejo and west by Montemor-o-Novo . It is the seat of District and from an old diocese, being an ecclesiastical metropolis ( Archdiocese of Évora ).
Its well-preserved historic center is one of the richest monuments in Portugal, earning it the epithet City-Museum. In 1986, the historic city center was declared World Heritage through the UNESCO .
It is known as the capital in fact of Alentejo .
The city of Évora is a candidate for European Capital of Culture 2027.
